Wel of geen smartphone in de klas? De meningen zijn verdeeld. Wat zegt internationaal onderzoek hierover? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frankrijk als gidsland? Wat betreft het beleid ten aanzien van mobiele telefoons in het algemeen vormend onderwijs misschien wel. Dat is daar sinds enkele jaren bij wet verboden en naar verluid varen leerlingen als leerkrachten\/docenten er wel bij. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dat verrast niet. Uit de meta-studie van Chen en Yan (2016) blijkt dat mobiele telefoons een negatief effect hebben op het leren. Er werd voortgebouwd op eerdere reviews die concludeerden dat multitasking met je mobiel negatieve effecten heeft op \u2018efficiency\u2019, \u2018learning\u2019 en \u2018recall\u2019 (Carrillo & Subrahmanyam, 2014).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In de studie van Chen en Yan (2016) werd de hoofdoorzaak van de negatieve effecten blootgelegd: \u201c\u2026mobile phone multitasking results in distraction.\u201d De mobiel leidt af doordat die overgaat, doordat tekstberichten verschijnen en doordat social media op ingenieuze wijze de aandacht trekt. Dit alles vermindert het vermogen tot aandachtig zijn. En daarmee het vermogen tot leren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dit is ook precies de reden waarom een meerderheid van leraren pleit voor een ban op smartphones op school. Het leidt teveel af! Onderzoek van Teacher Tapp (2022) laat zien dat 39% van de leerkrachten vindt dat een verbond tot 18 jaar zou moeten gelden, 12% vindt dat het verbod er tot 15 jaar moet zijn en 22% vindt dat het verbod er zou moeten komen voor kinderen onder de 12 jaar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zorgt het verbannen van smartphones dan voor betere prestaties? Daar lijkt het inderdaad wel op. Deze \u2018difference in difference\u2019 studie van Beneito en Vicente-Chirivella (2021) uit Spanje concludeert bijvoorbeeld: \u201cThe results show noticeable reductions of bullying incidence among teenagers in the two treated regions. The authors also find positive and significant effects of this policy on the PISA scores of the Galicia region that are equivalent to 0.6\u20130.8 years of learning in maths and around 0.72 to near one year of learning in sciences.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vergelijkbare studies in andere landen (Engeland en Noorwegen) komen tot soortgelijke positieve conclusies voor het verbannen van smartphones. Er wordt meer geleerd, en met name door de \u2018lowest achieving students\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natuurlijk, het zijn correlaties, aanvullende studies zijn nodig om meer duidelijkheid te krijgen en bij juist didactisch gebruik kan smartphone gebruik resulteren in effectief leren, maar dit soort negatieve bevindingen kunnen we als montessorionderwijs zeker niet negeren. De praktijkervaring leert dat het slim is om smartphones bij het leren te weren en de wetenschappelijke evidentie bevestigt dit. Het slimme besluit over smartphone (school)beleid lijkt mij logisch hieruit voort te kunnen vloeien.<\/p>\n\n\n
