Wat is het effect van het verbannen van smartphones op de mentale gezondheid van leerlingen? Dat was de vraag. Uitkomsten tonen dat pestgedrag afneemt en het welbevinden toeneemt, met name dat van meisjes. Zelfs de leerprestaties van de meisjes verbeterden significant. In zo\u2019n geval is het echter altijd verstandig om doelbewust te zoeken naar studies met andere uitkomsten. Studies die de eigen idee\u00ebn dus niet verifi\u00ebren, maar juist falsificeren. Zijn er ook studies die de hypothese dat het verbannen van smartphones nodig is, ontkrachten?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Googlen levert onder meer deze studie op. Hierin is met behulp van de PISA-data gekeken of er een samenhang is tussen het verbannen van smartphones en de leerprestaties. Er was een duidelijke samenhang. Maar gek genoeg een omgekeerde. Landen met een hoog percentage scholen die smartphones verbannen, presteren minder goed. \u201cStudents in schools with phone bans have lower achievement across their PISA test scores than those in schools that allow phone use.\u201d Nu is correlatie geen causaliteit, maar toch.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bera.ac.uk\/blog\/mobile-phone-bans-in-schools-impact-on-achievement\">https:\/\/www.bera.ac.uk\/blog\/mobile-phone-bans-in-schools-impact-on-achievement<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Verder googlen levert deze scoping review op. Conclusie: er is nog maar weinig onderzoek naar de effecten van het verbannen van smartphones. Zoals de auteurs stellen: \u201cOverall, our study suggests the evidence for banning mobile phones in schools is weak and inconclusive.\u201d Zoveel bewijs is er dus nog helemaal niet en zo stevig is het niet. Is een beleidsmaatregel gerechtvaardigd als er nog zo weinig evidentie is voor de positieve effecten ervan? <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/we-looked-at-all-the-recent-evidence-on-mobile-phone-bans-in-schools-this-is-what-we-found-224848\">https:\/\/theconversation.com\/we-looked-at-all-the-recent-evidence-on-mobile-phone-bans-in-schools-this-is-what-we-found-224848<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dit zijn niet direct redenen om smartphones weer toe te laten. Punt is dat het goed is om de eigen veronderstellingen te proberen te falsificeren. Dit is interessanter en meer leerzaam dan alleen oog te hebben voor studies die het eigen standpunt verifi\u00ebren. In dit licht is het interessant om nog eens kritisch te kijken naar ons eigen onderwijs, de veronderstellingen die eraan ten grondslag liggen en om deze kritisch aan de tand te voelen op basis van de wetenschappelijke kennisstand. Want uiteindelijk wordt ons montessorionderwijs daar beter van. Dus laten we dat wat meer doen.
